Public health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of a population, through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals. The 5 core areas of public health are: epidemiology, biostatistics, health services, environmental health, and social and behavioral health. Epidemiology is the study of the causes, distribution, and control of diseases and other health-related factors in a population. Biostatistics is the use of statistics to understand and analyze public health problems and their solutions. Health services includes the delivery of health care and public health activities such as health education and promotion, disease prevention, and health protection. Environmental health is the study of how environmental factors, such as air and water pollution, affect human health. Social and behavioral health is the study of how social and behavioral factors, such as diet, exercise, and substance use, affect human health.
