An innovate scheme in Shropshire helping to preserve a centuries-old way of life aims to tempt visitors with everything from vintage cottages and tearooms to traditional jam-making… and even courses on how to keep pigs!

Countryside businesses committed to becoming more sustainable have joined forces as part of the scheme to protect landscapes, lifestyles and livelihoods in the remote and picturesque Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

More than 100 local businesses have signed up for The Shropshire Hills Sustainable Business Scheme which champions a ‘Buy Local’ message to both locals and visitors, while every business also pledges to do their own bit to reduce their impact on the environment.

A new green cottages scheme has been launched by West Country self-catering specialists, Helpful Holidays, aiming to encourage their home owners to think sustainably. Eleven holiday homes in the agency’s portfolio now carry their green tree symbol with more joining the initiative in the near future.

In order to qualify, each cottage is assessed by Helpful Holidays against 69 aspects which help them make a lesser impact on the environment. Particular regard is given to energy, pollution and water as well as the environmental effect on local wildlife and landscapes. Beneficial features such as solar and wind power, a natural spring or borehole water supply and electric vehicle charging points will be highly rated.
