The Prime Minister has sent his congratulations to the couple, wishing them all the best.

Next year's wedding will be an enormous event, with kings, queens and heads of state from around the world expected to be guests. The venue has not been confirmed.

Kate, who met William when they were both studying at the University of St Andrews, has made every effort to fit in with the royal way of life and has already embraced the royal family's countryside pursuits.

She will become Queen when William is King.

Queen Catherine, as she may one day choose to be styled, will inherit a host of titles during her life as a royal.

She faces a very different future ahead of her amid expectations that the couple will bring a touch of glamour to the royal household.

William had to ask the Queen's consent to marry because of a law dating from the 18th century.

His grandmother will have signed an elaborate notice of approval, transcribed in calligraphy, and issued under the Great Seal of the Realm.
