The EU is about to end its wasteful fishing quotas – bringing a stunning victory for campaigners in Britain. The scandal of 1.3 million tons of fish being discarded each year was exposed last month by celebrity TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in the Channel 4 programme Big Fish Fight. More than 650,000 people signed a letter urging for the Brussels-based laws to be re-written. Now the change is set to be made with European Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki tomorrow putting forward plans to ban the practice of “discards”.
